Vauxhall (UK Parliament Constituency) - History

History

The Vauxhall area has traditionally been left wing. The former seat of Lambeth North and the Vauxhall seat (first contested under that name in 1950) have been represented by Labour Members of Parliament for almost all of the twentieth century apart from 1931 to 1934. Margot Heinemann stood as the communist candidate for the constituency in the 1950 General Election.

The 1989 by-election (see separate article) was notable for the large number of candidates and the tensions that it caused within the local Labour Party due to the selection of Kate Hoey as the official candidate.

The local government wards in the constituency are currently divided between Labour and Liberal Democrats on Lambeth London Borough Council. A single Conservative represented Clapham Town ward until losing the seat in the 2006 local elections.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

History does nothing; it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this.... It is not “history” which uses men as a means of achieving—as if it were an individual person—its own ends. History is nothing but the activity of men in pursuit of their ends.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

Racism is an ism to which everyone in the world today is exposed; for or against, we must take sides. And the history of the future will differ according to the decision which we make.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)

I assure you that in our next class we will concern ourselves solely with the history of Egypt, and not with the more lurid and non-curricular subject of living mummies.
Griffin Jay, and Reginald LeBorg. Prof. Norman (Frank Reicher)
