Vanguard Managed Solutions

Vanguard Managed Solutions (VanguardMS) was an LLC company, owned by Platinum Equity and specialized in monitoring live data networks from a Network operations center, while providing their own "Vanguard" brand of IP routers to target a dual need in the Data Communication's market. VanguardMS existed from 2001 to 2007. Platium Equity sold the Network Monitoring business section to CompuCom in 2007, but retained the IP router business now renamed to Vanguard Networks.

History: The company was once a division of the Motorola Information Systems Group. Motorola purchased Codex Corporation in 1977. The ISG division based in Mansfield, MA became a leader in Enterprise and Retail markets with their "Vanguard" series Motorola routers. The Vanguard series delivered transport capabilities of multiplexing Voice, Legacy Protocols, and IP Routing over a single Frame Relay circuit using Annex_G protocol derived from X.25. The product's popularity led to its expansion of a Managed services unit where existing router customers were given the option to have their network monitored in real time for Frame Relay outages, and hardware failures. This service attracted customers who preferred a hands-off approach to maintaining their own networks, and not have to deal with contacting the Telco for Frame Relay Circuit outages on their own.

By 2000, Motorola was forced to close or sell off some of their own business units due to economic difficulties. The potential of this dual-functioning business unit attracted Platinum Equity, a holding company who purchased the division from Motorola in 2001. The Network Management unit became a leading player in the Network monitoring business and was purchased in 2007 by CompuCom to complement their own business portfolio. The Multi-service router unit remained with Platinum Equity. The "VanguardMS" title was changed to Vanguard Networks
