Vandalia (colony)
Vandalia was the name of a proposed British colony in North America. The colony was located south of the Ohio River, primarily in what are now the U.S. states of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.
Although Vandalia never was approved by the British Crown and did not have colonial government, some Anglo-American pioneers settled there. When the United States achieved independence in the American Revolutionary War, Vandalia-area settlers proposed (unsuccessfully) that Vandalia be admitted as a state called Westsylvania. They were opposed by the governments of Virginia and Pennsylvania, which both claimed the area.
