Vancouver Fringe Festival - History

History

The first Vancouver Fringe Festival was held in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. In 1995, the festival relocated to Commercial Drive. At that time, the festival introduced "bring your own venue", in which performers stage performances at places other than those provided by the festival organizers. As of 2011, the Vancouver Fringe Festival runs 11 days in 25 venues, centred on Granville Island, with other performances around the city.

The Vancouver Fringe Festival adheres to the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals model. The most important tenets of this model are that productions are selected by lottery (in provincial, national and international categories), with all box office proceeds retained by each production. In addition to donations, the festival society raises funds for itself by requiring attendees to pay a membership fee in addition to purchasing tickets for each show.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Modern Western thought will pass into history and be incorporated in it, will have its influence and its place, just as our body will pass into the composition of grass, of sheep, of cutlets, and of men. We do not like that kind of immortality, but what is to be done about it?
    Alexander Herzen (1812–1870)

A man acquainted with history may, in some respect, be said to have lived from the beginning of the world, and to have been making continual additions to his stock of knowledge in every century.
    David Hume (1711–1776)

False history gets made all day, any day,
the truth of the new is never on the news
False history gets written every day
    ...
    the lesbian archaeologist watches herself
sifting her own life out from the shards she’s piecing,
asking the clay all questions but her own.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
