Main Characters
- Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway, the narrator. She is a teenager training to be a guardian at St. Vladimir's Academy. She is bonded with Lissa because Lissa brought her back from the dead. Rose falls in love with Dimitri who is older than her. When Dimitri is turned into a strigoi, Rose tries to kill him.
- Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir, the last of the royal Dragomir’s and Rose's best friend.She can bring things back to life, heal and use compulsion.
- Dimitri Belikov, a twenty-four-year-old Russian dhampir and guardian. He is Rose's primary love interest. When he turns into a strigoi he tries to make Rose one but she escapes.
- Christian Ozera, Lissa's primary love interest. His parents were strigoi so now everybody thinks that he will be one too so they keep a distance from him.
- Adrian Ivashkov, a spirit user. Has a crush on Rose.
- Mia Rinaldi, Rose and Lissa's enemy at St. Vladimir's Academy.
