Vadstena Abbey - Modern Abbey

Modern Abbey

A new monastery of Bridgettine nuns was founded on the grounds of the ancient abbey in 1963, named Mary's Peace (Latin: Pax Mariae). It was established from a Bridgettine abbey in the Netherlands, one of the four abbeys of the original branch of the Order, and currently numbers 13 nuns. In 1991 it was raised to the status of an autonomous abbey. Thus the Order founded by Saint Bridget has returned to its birthplace.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or abbey:

In the deeper layers of the modern consciousness ... every attempt to succeed is an act of aggression, leaving one alone and guilty and defenseless among enemies: one is punished for success. This is our intolerable dilemma: that failure is a kind of death and success is evil and dangerous, is—ultimately—impossible.
    Robert Warshow (1917–1955)

The Abbey always reminds me of that old toast, “Above lofty timbers, the walls around are bare, echoing to our laughter, as though the dead were there.”
    Garrett Fort (1900–1945)
