Utba Ibn Rabi'ah - Death

Death

Utba was killed in the battle of Badr, as narrated in the hadith collection of Sunan Abi Da'ud. In it, Ali is quoted saying:

(At the battle of Badr) Utbah ibn Rabi'ah came forward followed by his son and his brother and cried out: "Who will be engaged in a single combat?" Some young men of the Helpers responded to his call. He asked: "Who are you?" They told him they were some young men from the Ansars. He responded: "You are brave Indeed. However, We do not want you; we, in fact, want only our cousins." Muhammad said, "Get up Hamzah. Get up Ali. Get up Ubaydah ibn al-Harith". Hamzah went forward to Utbah. After few blows, Utbah was lying on the ground. I went forward to Shaybah; After few blows, I stroke him down. For Ubaydah and al-Walid, they wounded one another severely after two blows had been exchanged; so we turned against al-Walid and killed him, and we carried Ubaydah away."

Famous quotes containing the word death:

If society gives up the right to impose the death penalty, then self help will appear again and personal vendettas will be around the corner.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

I am tired with my own life and the lives of those after me,
I am dying in my own death and the deaths of those after me.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

Death, the most dreaded of all evils, is therefore of no concern to us; for while we exist death is not present, and when death is present we no longer exist.
    Epicurus (c. 341–271 B.C.)
