  • In the Tom Clancy novel Red Storm Rising (1986), Yorktown is one of three missile cruisers assigned the task of protecting U.S. Navy and Marine Corps ships participating in the campaign to liberate Iceland. During a Soviet air raid on several U.S. carriers, Yorktown unleashes her missiles at the incoming anti-ship missiles, eliminating nearly all of the incoming "vampires".
  • In the Tom Clancy novel Executive Orders (1996), Yorktown is one of several naval vessels assigned the task of escorting several Bob Hope-class vehicle cargo ship roll-on/roll-off ships to Saudi Arabia. The cruiser is damaged by a Silkworm missile during an Iranian air raid in the Persian Gulf.
