USS Wilhoite (DE-397) - Attacked By An Iceberg

Attacked By An Iceberg

After another brief period of unsuccessful "barrier patrols" between 1 and 6 April, Wilhoite trained out of New London, Connecticut, in ASW tactics with USS Mackerel and units of Hague's TG 22.3, before she resumed active U-boat hunting activities. At 2327 on 19 April, Wilhoite went to general quarters to investigate a radar contact and, at 2343, illuminated the area with starshell. The object of the attention turned out to be a large, drifting iceberg.

Meanwhile, the war on the European continent had been nearing its end; but the Battle of the Atlantic continued. Soon after the encounter with the iceberg, Wilhoite resumed "barrier patrols" with Bogue's TG 22.3. She was screening the carrier when Bogue's planes spotted a U-boat running on the surface at 1300 on 23 April. The aircraft attacked, but the U-boat "pulled the plug" and went deep in time to escape.

Famous quotes containing the words attacked by, attacked and/or iceberg:

When you suffer an attack of nerves you’re being attacked by the nervous system. What chance has a man got against a system?
    Russell Hoban (b. 1925)

When Hitler attacked the Jews ... I was not a Jew, therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then, Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church—and there was nobody left to be concerned.
    Martin Niemller (1892–1984)

    As the shade went up
And the ambulance came crashing through the dust
Of the new day, the moon and the sun and the stars,
    And the iceberg slowly sank
In the volcano and the sea ran far away
Yellow over the hot sand, green as the green trees.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
