Following a shakedown cruise in the Gulf of Mexico, the freighter was turned over to the Overtakes Freight Corporation to be operated by that firm under a contract with the Maritime Commission. Famous quotes containing the words world, war and/or service:

    I know some of my self-worth comes from tennis, and it’s hard to think of doing something else where you know you’ll never be the best. Tennis players are rare creatures: where else in the world can you know that you’re the best? The definitiveness of it is the beauty of it, but it’s not all there is to life and I’m ready to explore the alternatives.
    Martina Navratilova (b. 1956)

    —Thus their hands are plucking at each other;
    Picking at the rope-knouts of their scourging;
    Snatching after us who smote them, brother,
    Pawing us who dealt them war and madness.
    Wilfred Owen (1893–1918)

    But when with moving accents thou
    Shalt constant faith and service vow,
    Thy Celia shall receive those charms
    With open ears, and with unfolded arms.
    Thomas Carew (1589–1639)
