USS Washtenaw County (LST-1166) - Commercial Service

Commercial Service

Washtenaw County was sold in 1973 to an unknown company and renamed Al Manhal 1. She was resold in 1980 to Cooperative de Transportadores Centroamericanos R.L. of Panama, converted to a roll-on/roll-off vessel, and renamed El Centroamericano. El Centroamericano arrived in tow at Portland, Oregon, in October 1980 with mechanical troubles; she was still there on 19 January 1984 when her engine room flooded. She was subsequently sold to J.H. Leitz and Associates, Inc. of Portland.

Famous quotes containing the words commercial and/or service:

There is every reason to rejoice with those self-styled prophets of commercial disaster, those harbingers of gloom,
Over the imminent lateness of the denouement that, advancing slowly, never arrives,
At the same time keeping the door open to a tongue-in-cheek attitude on the part of the perpetrators....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Night City was like a deranged experiment in Social Darwinism, designed by a bored researcher who kept one thumb permanently on the fast-forward button. Stop hustling and you sank without a trace, but move a little too swiftly and you’d break the fragile surface tension of the black market; either way, you were gone ... though heart or lungs or kidneys might survive in the service of some stranger with New Yen for the clinic tanks.
    William Gibson (b. 1948)
