Rescuing Survivors From USS Stafford

Elsewhere in the immediate vicinity, Japanese planes crashed into the Australian heavy cruiser HMAS Australia and USS Stafford (DE-411). The latter, holed on her starboard side aft, between the after engine room and fire room, initially seemed lost as fire broke out on board. Ulvert M. Moore closed to port and took off 54 men and 3 officers while USS Halligan (DD-584) nudged alongside to starboard and took off additional crewmen.

Famous quotes containing the words rescuing and/or survivors:

Thank you, my rescuer, if one can speak of rescuing where there is little danger.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

I want to celebrate these elms which have been spared by the plague, these survivors of a once flourishing tribe commemorated by all the Elm Streets in America. But to celebrate them is to be silent about the people who sit and sleep underneath them, the homeless poor who are hauled away by the city like trash, except it has no place to dump them. To speak of one thing is to suppress another.
    Lisel Mueller (b. 1924)
