Uhlmann was laid down on 6 March 1943 at Staten Island, New York, by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched on 30 July 1943; sponsored by Mrs. C. F. Uhlmann, mother of Ens. Uhlmann; and commissioned on 22 November 1943 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Commander Selden G. Hooper in command.
