USS Thomas J. Gary (DE-326) - Duties in The Far East and Europe

Duties in The Far East and Europe

Later in the month, she steamed on to the Ryukyus with the escort carrier group: and she operated out of Okinawa into October, conducting exercises in the East China Sea. On 19 October, while at sea with the escort carrier group, she struck a submerged log, which caused considerable damage to her starboard propeller. Slowed to 13 knots, she was forced to leave the formation and put in at Saipan on 23 November for repairs.

She next operated in the Philippines into the new year with calls at Hong Kong and Okinawa. She parted Singapore on 8 April 1946 and set her course via the Suez Canal for the Mediterranean where she spent much of May visiting European ports. On 29 May, she arrived at Charleston to commence dry-docking and preservation procedures. ON 25 September, tug Nancy Moran towed the destroyer escort from Charleston and headed for Green Cove Springs, Florida. She was decommissioned there on 7 March 1947 and placed in reserve.

Famous quotes containing the words duties, east and/or europe:

The deadly monotony of Christian country life where there are no beggars to feed, no drunkards to credit, which are among the moral duties of Christians in cities, leads as naturally to the outvent of what Methodists call “revivals” as did the backslidings of the people in those days.
    Corra May Harris (1869–1935)

My impression about the Panama Canal is that the great revolution it is going to introduce in the trade of the world is in the trade between the east and the west coast of the United States.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

Humanism, it seems, is almost impossible in America where material progress is part of the national romance whereas in Europe such progress is relished because it feels nice.
    Paul West (b. 1930)
