USS Sarsfield (DD-837)

USS Sarsfield (DD-837), a Gearing-class destroyer, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Eugene S. Sarsfield, an officer and commander of the Maddox. He disappeared after the sinking of his ship and was presumed dead on 11 July 1943.

Sarsfield was laid down on 15 January 1945 by the Bath Iron Works Co., Bath, Maine; launched on 27 May 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Eugene S. Sarsfield; and commissioned at Boston Naval Shipyard on 31 July 1945, with Commander Hepburn A. Pierce in command.
