USS S-33 (SS-138) - in Popular Culture

In Popular Culture

A fictional version of the S-33 is depicted as being part of the Atlantic fleet in 1942 in the 2000 film "U-571", starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton and Jon Bon Jovi.

In the story the S-33 (disgusied as a German U-Boat) is sent to recover an Enigma machine from a damaged German U-Boat (the title's eponymous and equally fictionalized version of the German submarine U-571). During the course of the story this S-33 is sunk by another German submarine who arrives to help the U-571.

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

People try so hard to believe in leaders now, pitifully hard. But we no sooner get a popular reformer or politician or soldier or writer or philosopher—a Roosevelt, a Tolstoy, a Wood, a Shaw, a Nietzsche, than the cross-currents of criticism wash him away. My Lord, no man can stand prominence these days. It’s the surest path to obscurity. People get sick of hearing the same name over and over.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

Here is this vast, savage, howling mother of ours, Nature, lying all around, with such beauty, and such affection for her children, as the leopard; and yet we are so early weaned from her breast to society, to that culture which is exclusively an interaction of man on man,—a sort of breeding in and in, which produces at most a merely English nobility, a civilization destined to have a speedy limit.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
