USS Mattabesset (AOG-52) - Arctic Circle Initiation

Arctic Circle Initiation

During July 1965, Mattabesset made a cruise to the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea; and all hands were initiated into the "Order of the Polar Bear" when the ship crossed the Arctic Circle on that cruise. She returned to the Mediterranean three more times between March 1966 and August 1968, again participating in various NATO and 6th Fleet operations.

Famous quotes containing the words arctic circle, arctic, circle and/or initiation:

    Does the first wild-goose care
whether the others follow or not?
I don’t think so he is so happy to be off
he knows where he is going
so we must be drawn or we must fly,
like the snow-geese of the Arctic circle.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

The chisel work of an enormous Glacier
That braced his feet against the Arctic Pole.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Change begets change. Nothing propagates so fast. If a man habituated to a narrow circle of cares and pleasures, out of which he seldom travels, step beyond it, though for never so brief a space, his departure from the monotonous scene on which he has been an actor of importance would seem to be the signal for instant confusion.... The mine which Time has slowly dug beneath familiar objects is sprung in an instant; and what was rock before, becomes but sand and dust.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

The difficult and risky task of meeting and mastering the new—whether it be the settlement of new lands or the initiation of new ways of life—is not undertaken by the vanguard of society but by its rear. It is the misfits, failures, fugitives, outcasts and their like who are among the first to grapple with the new.
    Eric Hoffer (1902–1983)
