USS Cushing (DD-985) - Fate

Fate

USS Cushing operated out of Yokosuka in Japan for the last several years of her career. Cushing was the last Spruance class ship to remain in active service, until decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on 21 September 2005. GlobalSecurity.org showed the ship listed for grant transfer to Turkey. Ex-Cushing was sunk as a target during RIMPAC 2008 along with David R. Ray, Fletcher and Horne.

Famous quotes containing the word fate:

See him, when starved to death and turned to dust,
    Presented with a monumental bust!
The poet’s fate is here in emblem shown:
He asked for bread, and he received a stone.
    Samuel Wesley (1691–1739)

    In separation, deadly as poison,
    in union, brimming with nectar.
What, did fate make my love
    out of both equally?
    Hla Stavhana (c. 50 A.D.)

Fate forces its way to the powerful and violent. With subservient obedience it will assume for years dependency on one individual: Caesar, Alexander, Napoleon, because it loves the elemental human being who grows to resemble it, the intangible element. Sometimes, and these are the most astonishing moments in world history, the thread of fate falls into the hands of a complete nobody but only for a twitching minute.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)
