Construction and Commissioning

Columbia was laid down on 18 August 1940 by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; and launched on 17 December 1941 sponsored by Miss J. A. Paschal. She was commissioned on 29 July 1942, with Captain W. A. Heard in command.
