She was launched 25 July 1941 by Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny, New Jersey; sponsored by Mrs. Powell Clayton, and commissioned 22 October 1941, Lieutenant Commander C. C. Wood in command. 22 Oct 1941 - Sep 22 1942 (Later RADM) CDR John Albert Glick 22 Sep 1942 - Oct 13 1943
