Civilian Service

SS St. John was built in 1932 by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia and was operated as a passenger liner by the Eastern Steamship Lines. St. John, along with her sister ship the SS Acadia, entered coastal service for New York-Yarmouth-Halifax or Saint John. From 1938-1940 the vessel also ran in New York-Bermuda or Nassau service. In 1939, the vessel was chartered to the United States Lines for one voyage to carry American construction workers to air base projects in Bermuda. Acquired by the Navy on 24 April 1941 the ship was renamed Antaeus (AS-21) and commissioned on 17 May 1941, Comdr. R. S. Morse in command.

Famous quotes containing the word service:

For those parents from lower-class and minority communities ... [who] have had minimal experience in negotiating dominant, external institutions or have had negative and hostile contact with social service agencies, their initial approaches to the school are often overwhelming and difficult. Not only does the school feel like an alien environment with incomprehensible norms and structures, but the families often do not feel entitled to make demands or force disagreements.
    Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)
