USNS Blue Jacket (T-AF-51)

USNS Blue Jacket (T-AF-51) was an Alstede-class stores ship acquired by the U.S. Navy for use during World War II. However, during the war, she was operated by the United Fruit Company, and it was not until 1950 that she was reacquired by the Navy for use by the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS).

Blue Jacket—a C2-S-B1 type freighter—was laid down under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 183) on 23 October 1941 at Oakland, California, by the Moore Dry Dock Co.; launched on 14 February 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Edward U. Read; and delivered to her operators, the United Fruit Co., on 25 March 1943.

Famous quotes containing the words blue and/or jacket:

That air would disappear from the whole earth in time, perhaps; but long after his day. He did not know just when it had become so necessary to him, but he had come back to die in exile for the sake of it. Something soft and wild and free, something that whispered to the ear on the pillow, lightened the heart, softly, softly picked the lock, slid the bolts, and released the prisoned spirit of man into the wind, into the blue and gold, into the morning, into the morning!
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)

And what’s romance? Usually, a nice little tale where you have everything As You Like It, where rain never wets your jacket and gnats never bite your nose and it’s always daisy-time.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)
