U.S. Route 441 - History

History

In Florida, where signs for U.S. Highways formerly had different colors for each highway (until the state was forced by the federal government to conform to standards that required consistent black-and-white signs), the "shield" for US 441 was brown.

In early 2007, the Florida Department of Transportation demolished the NW 7th Avenue Bridge over which the highway passed. The replacement bridge was not finished until 2011, and thus the temporary southern terminus of US 441 was the Miami River rather than the current US 41 in Miami.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

The history of mankind interests us only as it exhibits a steady gain of truth and right, in the incessant conflict which it records between the material and the moral nature.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

For a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)
