Building History

The original building was constructed in the early 19th century. However, this building was burnt down in an unexplained accident on December 19, 1896. The city was given money for a new building through a grant from the state. The new building was then constructed on the same location as the original building. It was designed to resemble a castle. Construction was completed in the fall of 1897. Additions to this original building have been made over the years. The most recent of the permanent additions was completed in the mid 1950's.

Famous quotes containing the words building and/or history:

Are we not madder than those first inhabitants of the plain of Sennar? We know that the distance separating the earth from the sky is infinite, and yet we do not stop building our tower.
    Denis Diderot (1713–1784)

History does nothing; it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this.... It is not “history” which uses men as a means of achieving—as if it were an individual person—its own ends. History is nothing but the activity of men in pursuit of their ends.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)
