The enzyme urate oxidase (UO), or uricase or factor-independent urate hydroxylase, catalyzes the oxidation of uric acid to 5-hydroxyisourate:
- Uric acid + O2 + H2O → 5-hydroxyisourate + H2O2 → allantoin + CO2
