Famous quotes containing the words upper, saddle, river, school and/or district:

When my old wife lived, upon
This day she was both pantler, butler, cook,
Both dame and servant, welcomed all, served all,
Would sing her song and dance her turn, now here
At upper end o’the table, now i’the middle,
On his shoulder, and his, her face afire
With labor, and the thing she took to quench it
She would to each one sip.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Oh, give me again the rover’s life—the joy, the thrill, the whirl! Let me feel thee again, old sea! let me leap into thy saddle once more. I am sick of these terra firma toils and cares; sick of the dust and reek of towns.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

A reaction: a boat which is going against the current but which does not prevent the river from flowing on.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

I have often told you that I am that little fish who swims about under a shark and, I believe, lives indelicately on its offal. Anyway, that is the way I am. Life moves over me in a vast black shadow and I swallow whatever it drops with relish, having learned in a very hard school that one cannot be both a parasite and enjoy self-nourishment without moving in worlds too fantastic for even my disordered imagination to people with meaning.
    Zelda Fitzgerald (1900–1948)

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
