Historical University
The original Jesuit university was founded in 1635 by the Archbishop of Esztergom, Péter Pázmány. It had a faculty of arts, faculty of theology, faculty of law (since 1667) and faculty of medicine (since 1769). It lasted 142 years in Trnava (Nagyszombat) when it was moved to Buda in 1777 and finally to Pest in 1784. Its legal successor is the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary.

Famous quotes containing the words historical and/or university:
“We can imagine a society in which no one could survive as a social being because it does not correspond to biologically determined perceptions and human social needs. For historical reasons, existing societies might have such properties, leading to various forms of pathology.”
—Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)
“I had a classmate who fitted for college by the lamps of a lighthouse, which was more light, we think, than the University afforded.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
