University of New York Tirana

University of New York Tirana (UNYT) is the first private university in Albania. The university was inaugurated in September 2002, having received a license from the Albanian government.

UNYT offers Bachelor’s degrees conferred by the State University of New York's Empire State College in Tirana. However, a 2012 New York Times article disputes the validity of this affiliation. The reporter states that, "on a recent visit to the Albanian campus, SUNY’s influence seemed more like a label than an active presence."

Since September 2004, UNYT, in collaboration with Institut Universitaire Kurt Bösch in Sion, Switzerland and the University of Sunderland, offers a Master of Business Administration program. As of June 2004, UNYT has become an associate partner of the Cambridge University International Examinations.

The rector is Dr. Barbara Adams, who replaced the late Prof. Dr. Gramoz Pashko (former Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Economy of the Republic of Albania), who died in a helicopter crash in July 2006.

There are 510 students enrolled in the academic programs. UNYT offers study through the SUNY Learning Network.

The great problem of American life [is] the riddle of authority: the difficulty of finding a way, within a liberal and individualistic social order, of living in harmonious and consecrated submission to something larger than oneself.... A yearning for self-transcendence and submission to authority [is] as deeply rooted as the lure of individual liberation.

In bourgeois society, the French and the industrial revolution transformed the authorization of political space. The political revolution put an end to the formalized hierarchy of the ancien regimé.... Concurrently, the industrial revolution subverted the social hierarchy upon which the old political space was based. It transformed the experience of society from one of vertical hierarchy to one of horizontal class stratification.
Donald M. Lowe, U.S. historian, educator. History of Bourgeois Perception, ch. 4, University of Chicago Press (1982)
