In May 2010, Peter McCaffery left his position as Vice-Chancellor by mutual agreement with the Board of Governors. An interim Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Upton, served from 21 May 2010 until 1 August 2011, when the Peter Strike was appointed.

The University has debts totalling £13,000,000 and in March 2010, the University received a cash advance from HEFCE to enable it to pay staff. It has since pulled itself out of debt and is profitable.
