The University District Museum Without Walls is a virtual museum in Seattle, Washington's University District devoted to the history of that neighborhood. Described as an "ongoing cultural program that allows for new opportunities for the arts, history, and education," it includes or is planning multimedia exhibitions, billboards, trading cards, newly commissioned music, sculpture, and walking tours. The first exhibit, "Open to Question: Activism in Seattle's University District," opened in April 2009, and many of the project's elements referenced the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, which shaped the University of Washington campus and surrounding neighborhood and which celebrated its centenary in 2009.
Famous quotes containing the words university, district, museum and/or walls:
“In the United States, it is now possible for a person eighteen years of age, female as well as male, to graduate from high school, college, or university without ever having cared for, or even held, a baby; without ever having comforted or assisted another human being who really needed help. . . . No society can long sustain itself unless its members have learned the sensitivities, motivations, and skills involved in assisting and caring for other human beings.”
—Urie Bronfenbrenner (b. 1917)
“Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.”
—Rebecca West (18921983)
“When I go into a museum and see the mummies wrapped in their linen bandages, I see that the lives of men began to need reform as long ago as when they walked the earth. I come out into the streets, and meet men who declare that the time is near at hand for the redemption of the race. But as men lived in Thebes, so do they live in Dunstable today.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Nor stony tower, nor walls of beaten brass,
Nor airless dungeon, nor strong links of iron,
Can be retentive to the strength of spirit.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
