Universal Rule Formula
Mathematically, the Universal Rule formula was:
Variables:
- L - Boat length
- S - Sail area
- D - Displacement
- R - Rating
The numerator contains a yacht's speed-giving elements, length and sail area, while the retarding quantity of displacement is in the denominator. Also the result will be dimensionally correct; R will be a linear unit of length (such as feet or meters).
The listing for single mast boats, namely classes I through S.
- Class I: Rating = 88 feet
- Class J: Rating = 76 feet
- Class K: Rating = 65 feet
- Class L: Rating = 55 feet
- Class M: Rating = 46 feet
- Class N: Rating = 38 feet
- Class P: Rating = 31 feet
- Class Q: Rating = 25 feet
- Class R: Rating = 20 feet
- Class S: Rating = 17 feet
There were multi-mast classes too, running Class A to Class H.

Famous quotes containing the words universal, rule and/or formula:
“We are now going through a period of demolition. In morals, in social life, in politics, in medicine, and in religion there is a universal upturning of foundations. But the day of reconstruction seems to be looming, and now the grand question is: Are there any sure and universal principles that will evolve a harmonious system in which we shall all agree?”
—Catherine E. Beecher (18001878)
“You will find that reason, which always ought to direct mankind, seldom does; but that passions and weaknesses commonly usurp its seat, and rule in its stead.”
—Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (16941773)
“Its hard enough to adjust [to the lack of control] in the beginning, says a corporate vice president and single mother. But then you realize that everything keeps changing, so you never regain control. I was just learning to take care of the belly-button stump, when it fell off. I had just learned to make formula really efficiently, when Sarah stopped using it.”
—Anne C. Weisberg (20th century)
