A universal joint, universal coupling, U-joint, Cardan joint, Hardy-Spicer joint, or Hooke's joint is a joint or coupling in a rigid rod that allows the rod to 'bend' in any direction, and is commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion. It consists of a pair of hinges located close together, oriented at 90° to each other, connected by a cross shaft.

Famous quotes containing the words universal and/or joint:
“They are universal places, like churches, hallowed meeting places of all mankind.”
—Iris Murdoch (b. 1919)
“Such joint ownership creates a place where mothers can father and fathers can mother. It does not encourage mothers and fathers to compete with one another for first- place parent. Such competition is not especially good for marriage and furthermore drives kids nuts.”
—Kyle D. Pruett (20th century)
