Arson in The Elementary School Library

On April 5, 2004, a few hours before the beginning of Passover, a fire was set in the UTT (the elementary) St. Laurent campus' library. Approximately 15,000 books, along with all of the library’s furniture and computers were destroyed in the fire, causing more than $600,000 in damages. The perpetrators left a note on the school door and contacted a local TV station, stating their attack was in response to Israel's killing of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmad Yassin on March 22, 2004.

Famous quotes containing the words elementary, school and/or library:

As if paralyzed by the national fear of ideas, the democratic distrust of whatever strikes beneath the prevailing platitudes, it evades all resolute and honest dealing with what, after all, must be every healthy literature’s elementary materials.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

School days, school days; dear old golden rule days.
Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic; taught to the tune of a hick’ry stick.
    Will D. Cobb (1876–1930)

Venerable and calm, with all its treasures safe locked within its breast, it sleeps complacently and will, so far as I am concerned, so sleep forever. Never will I wake these echoes, never will I ask for that hospitality again ...
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
