United States Antarctic Program

United States Antarctic Program (or USAP; formerly known as the United States Antarctic Research Program or USARP and the United States Antarctic Service or USAS) is an organization of the United States government which has presence in the continent of Antarctica. It coordinates research and the operational support for research in the region. The body's goals are

"...to expand fundamental knowledge of the region, to foster research on global and regional problems of current scientific importance, and to use the region as a platform or base from which to support research."

The U.S. Antarctic Program, funded by the National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs, supports only that research that can be done exclusively in Antarctica or that can be done best from Antarctica.

Currently, the USAP maintains 3 year round research stations in Antarctica (McMurdo Station, Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and Palmer Station), as well as several seasonal field camps. Additionally, the USAP maintains research vessels that sail in the Antarctic waters.

The program's fiscal budget for 2008 was $295 million.

The Canada Goose Expedition parka is standard issue for all participants in USAP.

Famous quotes containing the words united states, united, states and/or program:

Vanessa wanted to be a ballerina. Dad had such hopes for her.... Corin was the academically brilliant one, and a fencer of Olympic standard. Everything was expected of them, and they fulfilled all expectations. But I was the one of whom nothing was expected. I remember a game the three of us played. Vanessa was the President of the United States, Corin was the British Prime Minister—and I was the royal dog.
    Lynn Redgrave (b. 1943)

The United States is a republic, and a republic is a state in which the people are the boss. That means us. And if the big shots in Washington don’t do like we vote, we don’t vote for them, by golly, no more.
    Willis Goldbeck (1900–1979)

Nullification ... means insurrection and war; and the other states have a right to put it down.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

Utah is the only State that gives condemned men a choice between death by hanging or before a firing squad. Most prisoners prefer the firing squad, but one obstinate convict in 1912 elected to be hanged because “hanging is more expensive to the state.”
