United Nations Security Council Resolution 326

United Nations Security Council Resolution 326, adopted on February 2, 1973, concerned with provocative and aggressive acts committed by Southern Rhodesia against Zambia and disturbed by the continued military intervention of South Africa in Rhodesia, the Council condemned all acts of provocation and harassment against Zambia.

The resolution demanded the immediate withdrawal of all South African military forces from Southern Rhodesia and from its border with Zambia and decided to dispatch a special mission (consisting of 4 members of the Council to be appointed by the President) to asses the situation in the area and report back by March 1, 1973. The Council also took the opportunity to reaffirm all of its previous positions against the nations of Southern Rhodesia and South Africa.

The resolution was adopted with 13 votes to none, with the United Kingdom and United States abstaining.

Famous quotes containing the words united, nations, security, council and/or resolution:

And hereby hangs a moral highly applicable to our own trustee-ridden universities, if to nothing else. If we really wanted liberty of speech and thought, we could probably get it—Spain fifty years ago certainly had a longer tradition of despotism than has the United States—but do we want it? In these years we will see.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

Other nations have tried to check ... the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.
    John Louis O’Sullivan (1813–1895)

There is something that Governments care for far more than human life, and that is the security of property, and so it is through property that we shall strike the enemy.... Be militant each in your own way.... I incite this meeting to rebellion.
    Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

It is a part of the American character to consider nothing as desperate; to surmount every difficulty by resolution and contrivance.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
