The term United Nations medal refers to one of several international decorations which are issued by the United Nations (U.N.) to the various militaries of the world for participation in joint international military and police operations such as peacekeeping, humanitarian efforts, and disaster relief. Famous quotes containing the words united nations, united and/or nations:

    The United Nations cannot do anything, and never could; it is not an animate entity or agent. It is a place, a stage, a forum and a shrine ... a place to which powerful people can repair when they are fearful about the course on which their own rhetoric seems to be propelling them.
    Conor Cruise O’Brien (b. 1917)

    The rising power of the United States in world affairs ... requires, not a more compliant press, but a relentless barrage of facts and criticism.... Our job in this age, as I see it, is not to serve as cheerleaders for our side in the present world struggle but to help the largest possible number of people to see the realities of the changing and convulsive world in which American policy must operate.
    James Reston (b. 1909)

    The soldier takes pride in saluting his Captain,
    The devotee proffers a knee to his Lord,
    Some back a mare thrown from a thoroughbred,
    Troy backed its Helen, Troy died and adored;
    Great nations blossom above,
    A slave bows down to a slave.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
