The United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP) was established in March 1998 by then-Secretary-General Kofi Annan. UNFIP is responsible for administering and developing partnerships between UN agencies, departments, and programmes and the private sector. UNFIP works with foundations and corporations that wish to support UN causes to identify opportunities for partnership and collaboration. In particular, UNFIP facilitates the UN's work with the UN Foundation, which Ted Turner established to donate US$1 billion to the UN over 15 years, though UNFIP has also worked closely with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Synergos Institute, and the LTB Foundation, among others. The companies which UNFIP has engaged in partnerships include Google and Microsoft.
The partnerships developed and managed by UNFIP all work towards achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals. UNFIP's priority areas within the MDGs, as identified on its website, are children's health; population and women; the environment, including biodiversity, energy, and climate change; and peace, security, and human rights.
UNFIP is overseen by an Advisory Board chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro. The Fund's offices are located at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
UNFIP is one component of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, which also includes the UN Democracy Fund.
It is a sitting observer of the United Nations Development Group.
Famous quotes containing the words united, nations and/or fund:
“The white American man makes the white American woman maybe not superfluous but just a little kind of decoration. Not really important to turning around the wheels of the state. Well the black American woman has never been able to feel that way. No black American man at any time in our history in the United States has been able to feel that he didnt need that black woman right against him, shoulder to shoulderin that cotton field, on the auction block, in the ghetto, wherever.”
—Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
“Two nations between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each others habits, thoughts, and feelings, as if they were dwellers in different zones, or inhabitants of different planets.... The rich and the poor.”
—Benjamin Disraeli (18041881)
“School success is not predicted by a childs fund of facts or a precocious ability to read as much as by emotional and social measures; being self-assured and interested: knowing what kind of behavior is expected and how to rein in the impulse to misbehave; being able to wait, to follow directions, and to turn to teachers for help; and expressing needs while getting along with other children.”
—Daniel Goleman (20th century)
