Civil Society
The UN DESA NGO Branch is the focal point within the UN Secretariat for non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and for NGOs seeking status. UN DESA services the 3,400 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in consultative status with the ECOSOC, and all other NGOs seeking to work with the UN. Each year, some 7,000 NGO representatives participate in those events in New York alone. According to the NGO Branch, the aims are the following:
- Support to NGOs: Informing you in a timely fashion on events and opportunities to collaborate with the United Nations.
- Intergovernmental Support: We service the Committee on NGOs, which meets twice a year to discuss accreditation of NGOs to the UN Economic and Social Council.
- Conference registration: Through CSONet, we facilitate participation of NGOs to most of the intergovernmental processes taking place at United Nations headquarters and beyond.

Famous quotes containing the words civil and/or society:
“I wish to see, in process of disappearing, that only thing which ever could bring this nation to civil war.”
—Abraham Lincoln (18091865)
“Throughout the history of commercial life nobody has ever quite liked the commission man. His function is too vague, his presence always seems one too many, his profit looks too easy, and even when you admit that he has a necessary function, you feel that this function is, as it were, a personification of something that in an ethical society would not need to exist. If people could deal with one another honestly, they would not need agents.”
—Raymond Chandler (18881959)
