United Nations Association

The United Nations Associations are non-governmental organizations that exist in various countries to enhance the relationship between the people of a member state and the United Nations, raise public awareness of the UN and its work, promote the general goals of the UN and act as an advisory body to governments, decision making and the news media. They are not a part of the UN itself.

Their long-term concerns comprise:

  • The implementation of the Millennium Development Goals
  • Peace, security and disarmament
  • Human rights and humanitarian affairs

There are currently over 120 UNAs around the world. The secretariats for the World Federation of United Nations Associations are located in Geneva and New York.

Famous quotes containing the words united, nations and/or association:

It is said that the British Empire is very large and respectable, and that the United States are a first-rate power. We do not believe that a tide rises and falls behind every man which can float the British Empire like a chip, if he should ever harbor it in his mind.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    “... There, there,
What you complain of, all the nations share.
Their effort is a mounting ecstasy
That when it gets too exquisite to bear
Will find relief in one burst. You shall see.
That’s what a certain bomb was sent to be.”
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

A good marriage ... is a sweet association in life: full of constancy, trust, and an infinite number of useful and solid services and mutual obligations.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
