United Musicians

United Musicians is an independent music collective founded by Aimee Mann, Michael Penn and Michael Hausman. According to UM's Web site, it is "founded on the principle that every artist should be able to retain copyright ownership of the work he or she has created and that this ownership is the basis for artistic strength and true independence."

Albums released through United Musicians are usually on the artist's own label; for example, UM's first full-length release, Mann's Bachelor No. 2, was on Mann's SuperEgo Records imprint. It is also not limited to musicians; stand-up comedian Patton Oswalt is among the collective's artists.

Famous quotes containing the words united and/or musicians:

You may consider me presumptuous, gentlemen, but I claim to be a citizen of the United States, with all the qualifications of a voter. I can read the Constitution, I am possessed of two hundred and fifty dollars, and the last time I looked in the old family Bible I found I was over twenty-one years of age.
    Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1816–1902)

As if the musicians did not so much play the little phrase as execute the rites required by it to appear, and they proceeded to the necessary incantations to obtain and prolong for a few instants the miracle of its evocation, Swann, who could no more see the phrase than if it belonged to an ultraviolet world ... Swann felt it as a presence, as a protective goddess and a confidante to his love, who to arrive to him ... had clothed the disguise of this sonorous appearance.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)
