Postal Markings
Mail posted during the fourpenny post period were marked with a figure 4 applied either in manuscript, or with a handstamp that were issued to a limited number of cities in Great Britain and Ireland. No handstamp has been recorded for London, even though Dublin Glasgow and Edinburgh were issued with handstamps. Some towns appear to have obtained their handstamps from unofficial sources.

Famous quotes containing the word postal:
“none
Thought of the others they would never meet
Or how their lives would all contain this hour.
I thought of London spread out in the sun,
Its postal districts packed like squares of wheat:”
—Philip Larkin (19221985)
