She was first married to Utaybah bin Abu Lahab. His father, Abū Lahab, forced Utaybah to repudiate Umm Kulthum due to Abu Lahab's opposition to Muhammad and his teachings.
She was married to Uthman ibn Affan after the death of his first wife Ruqayyah.
