The UMKC Kangaroos, sometimes called the Kansas City Kangaroos, are the 16 intercollegiate teams representing the University of Missouri–Kansas City that compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. UMKC currently competes in The Summit League in all sports, but on February 7, 2013, UMKC notified the Summit league that it had accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference.
The name was chosen in the 1930s for the school's debate team, following the acquisition of two baby kangaroos by the Kansas City Zoo.
Famous quotes containing the word kangaroos:
“If kangaroos had no tails, they would topple over seems to me to mean something like this: in any possible state of affairs in which kangaroos have no tails, and which resembles our actual state of affairs as much as kangaroos having no tails permits it to, the kangaroos topple over.”
—David Lewis (b. 1941)
