Umka - Population

Population

Umka is classified as an urban settlement (town), but many published sources refer to it as varošica (small town) even though statistically there is no such classification. The settlement experienced high growth of population after World War II, but has stagnated in the last three decades. New tourist settlement (vikend naselje) is built on the bank of the Sava.

Population of Umka:

  • 1921 - 772
  • 1961 - 3,731
  • 1971 - 5,458
  • 1981 - 5,618
  • 1991 - 4,840
  • 2002 - 5,292
  • 2011 - 5,103

Umka makes a continuous built-up urban area with another suburban settlement, Rucka, so in the future much smaller Rucka (population of 317, Census 2002) might be annexed to it.

Famous quotes containing the word population:

We in the West do not refrain from childbirth because we are concerned about the population explosion or because we feel we cannot afford children, but because we do not like children.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

The paid wealth which hundreds in the community acquire in trade, or by the incessant expansions of our population and arts, enchants the eyes of all the rest; the luck of one is the hope of thousands, and the bribe acts like the neighborhood of a gold mine to impoverish the farm, the school, the church, the house, and the very body and feature of man.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

What happened at Hiroshima was not only that a scientific breakthrough ... had occurred and that a great part of the population of a city had been burned to death, but that the problem of the relation of the triumphs of modern science to the human purposes of man had been explicitly defined.
    Archibald MacLeish (1892–1982)
