Ulster Senior League (association Football) - History

History

Football in the area, prior to 1972, was centred around what was known as 'Summer Cup football'. This was soccer organised on a non-competitive basis and it was left to various clubs to organise these. In 1972 the current Donegal League was set up and this organised football along competitive lines. Among the founder members were Michael Sweeney, club President of Fanad United, Dick Duffy and Patrick McFadden to seek affiliation to the FAI.

In 2006 the Ulster Senior League moved to become a summer league.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

The thing that struck me forcefully was the feeling of great age about the place. Standing on that old parade ground, which is now a cricket field, I could feel the dead generations crowding me. Here was the oldest settlement of freedmen in the Western world, no doubt. Men who had thrown off the bands of slavery by their own courage and ingenuity. The courage and daring of the Maroons strike like a purple beam across the history of Jamaica.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)

My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds.
    Neville Chamberlain (1869–1940)
