UK Energy Research Centre - History

History

UKERC was established in April 2004, following a recommendation from the 2002 Energy Review (see p146) initiated by Sir David King, the UK Government's Chief Scientific Advisor.

The Centre was set up to address key controversies in the energy field through comprehensive assessments of the current state of knowledge.

The first phase of the Centre ran from 2004 - 2009. In March 2009, £18.5 million was allocated to support the second phase of work at the UK Energy Research Centre for 2009 – 2014.

Under the Phase II funding, from May 2009 the UKERC has focused on 5 themes:

  • Energy Demand
  • Energy Supply
  • Energy Systems
  • Energy and Environment
  • Technology and Policy Assessment

Famous quotes containing the word history:

A poet’s object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

Universal history is the history of a few metaphors.
    Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986)

Let us not underrate the value of a fact; it will one day flower in a truth. It is astonishing how few facts of importance are added in a century to the natural history of any animal. The natural history of man himself is still being gradually written.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
