Famous quotes containing the words list of the, list of, list and/or shrines:

The advice of their elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841–1935)

Love’s boat has been shattered against the life of everyday. You and I are quits, and it’s useless to draw up a list of mutual hurts, sorrows, and pains.
    Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930)

We saw the machinery where murderers are now executed. Seven have been executed. The plan is better than the old one. It is quietly done. I would abolish it. But while it lasts this is the best mode.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

I don’t care very much for literary shrines and haunts ... I knew a woman in London who boasted that she had lodgings from the windows of which she could throw a stone into Carlyle’s yard. And when I said, “Why throw a stone into Carlyle’s yard?” she looked at me as if I were an imbecile and changed the subject.
    Carolyn Wells (1862–1942)
