Murray studied business administration and engineering at North Dakota, making dean's list as a freshman. He completed his degree at DePaul University during off-seasons while playing in Chicago.
Murray was an equity index options trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange circa 1997. His badge, the unique identifier each trader wears, was CUP.
Married, Murray and his wife Konnie have three children, Blake, Julia and Phoebe. A rink in St. Albert, Alberta, was named Troy Murray Arena in his honor.
