Transition Radiation

Transition Radiation

When a charged particle passes through a homogeneous dielectric media at a speed greater than the phase velocity of electromagnetic wave in that media it emits electromagnetic radiation, which is known as Vavilov Cherenkov radiation. In a case of not homogeneous media, like a media having boundary with another media, additional radiation takes place and it is called Transition Radiation (TR).

Famous quotes containing the words transition and/or radiation:

A transition from an author’s books to his conversation, is too often like an entrance into a large city, after a distant prospect. Remotely, we see nothing but spires of temples, and turrets of palaces, and imagine it the residence of splendor, grandeur, and magnificence; but, when we have passed the gates, we find it perplexed with narrow passages, disgraced with despicable cottages, embarrassed with obstructions, and clouded with smoke.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

There are no accidents, only nature throwing her weight around. Even the bomb merely releases energy that nature has put there. Nuclear war would be just a spark in the grandeur of space. Nor can radiation “alter” nature: she will absorb it all. After the bomb, nature will pick up the cards we have spilled, shuffle them, and begin her game again.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
