Trams in Asia - China

China

In the past, trams were used in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities in mainland China. The only cities with a conventional tram network now are the seaside cities of Dalian in Liaoning province, which as of 2003 had three working lines and Changchun in Jilin province. The city of Anshan, in Liaoning, had a single tram line from 1956 till the late 1990s and the track was dug up in 2006. Tianjin and Shanghai had recently introduced rubber tired trams - TEDA Modern Guided Rail Tram and Zhangjiang Tram. Wuhan, Shenyang and Suzhou have new light rail systems under construction. While Beijing, Zhuhai, Nanjing and Shenzhen are planning tram networks for the future.

Famous quotes containing the word china:

Consider the China pride and stagnant self-complacency of mankind. This generation inclines a little to congratulate itself on being the last of an illustrious line; and in Boston and London and Paris and Rome, thinking of its long descent, it speaks of its progress in art and science and literature with satisfaction.... It is the good Adam contemplating his own virtue.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve, I’ve dreamed of havin’ my own things about me. My spinet over there and a table here. My own chairs to rest upon and a dresser over there in that corner, and my own china and pewter shinin’ about me.
    Frank S. Nugent (1908–1965)

It all ended with the circuslike whump of a monstrous box on the ear with which I knocked down the traitress who rolled up in a ball where she had collapsed, her eyes glistening at me through her spread fingers—all in all quite flattered, I think. Automatically, I searched for something to throw at her, saw the china sugar bowl I had given her for Easter, took the thing under my arm and went out, slamming the door.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
